hear see do:
6 spreads and cover
description:
Create
a series of spreads that will be bound in book form.
Use image and text to visualize a set of transformations
in order to create a visual context. Use the relationships
and juxtapositions to qualify and expand it's meanings.
objectives:
>> Create an interplay of text, image and form
>> Apply new meaning to the image and type
>> Create a dynamic composition and a supporting
narrative
>> Unite an the xerox text and a montage of images
to create new interpretation of the quote:
"
I hear, I forget; I see, I understand; I do, I know."
--Confusious
introduction:
Because of our emersive experiences with text and image
we have become accustomed to seeing and working with
information. Yet the development of those simple forms
presents the challenge. How does one represent an object
or thing in it's simplest of form and still have it
communicate ideas? The image must visually set a reference.
The text must bounce off the image creating a communicative
reverberation.
stages:
Phase #1: Begin by developing a visual/verbal thesis
for your interpretation of the quote
You
may work from found imagery or from found objects. The
idea is to xerox the objects into a strictly black and
white rendition. Determine how to best represent the
idea utilizing text, images, shapes, and patterns of
black and white (no rendering). Remember, it is not
just a matter of making something that looks good; it
is an experimental communication - give it character,
uniqueness and style.
Phase
#2: Formal Changes to the icon
Consider
the following applications in order to transform the
the spreads into a new interpretation:
1.
Deconstruction
2. Substitution
3. Abstraction
4. Transformation
5. Distortion
6. Scale
7. Inversion
Phase
#3: Combined the Spreads to make sure they flow.
Avoid unwanted fractures.
Consider
how one idea transitions into the other.
Phase
#4: The book is influenced by a narrative, typographic
expression and compositional placement.
